Can I really watch high definition channels for free?
YES!! You sure can!! The days of "rabbit ears" antennas to get just the 3 networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) have transformed into over 20 nationwide network broadcasts. You can get high definition channels for free with an OTA (over the air) antenna. Local HD channels are broadcast from a tower as a terrestrial signal. Think of it like a car radio. If you are in within 65 miles then you can pick up these channels for free. The picture quality is outstanding and better than satellite or cable. Not only that, but some networks broadcast with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. An over the air digital antenna (also referred to as a HDTV Antenna or a DTV Antenna) will provide you with great local programming, with both superb video and audio performance in your area for free!
Why have broadcast TV Stations switched too all digital?
The US and Canadian governments mandated the conversion to all digital television broadcasting in 2009, also known as the digital television (DTV) transition, because all digital broadcasting will free up frequencies for public safety communications (such as police, fire, and emergency rescue). Also, digital is a more efficient transmission technology that allows broadcast stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, as well as offer more programming options for consumers through multiple broadcast streams (multicasting). In addition, some of the freed up frequencies will be used for advanced commercial wireless services for consumers.
